Race for the Galaxy is a strategy boardgame where players advance their empire by playing cards to build technological developments or to settle planets. Its core mechanic is a phase choosing game. Players secretly and simultaneously determine which one of seven phases they will lock in, all reveal at once, then execute the phases in order. Will you build an engine to ramp up VP generation on cheapo production planets? Will you invest in exploration and settle rare and valuable VP rich planets? Or will you rush a military conquest to cut off your opponents before they have a chance to develop their strategy. I think this might be the best app implementation of a tabletop board/card game I have ever encountered. After installation of all the optional expansions, I noticed occasional slowdowns for AI decision making, but otherwise this is a remarkable package. I appreciate the clear interface, and this is a great way to learn the real world game. It's possible to complete a game against the AI in 10-15 minutes that would have taken 1-2 hours against typical human opponents.

Unsure how but push notifications have resumed on the app, so I'm updating the review. Great app! Original: Excellent app for the game with a couple bugs, but this has been in constant use for friendly multiplayer games for ages. Sometime in the last couple months push notifications for multiplayer have completely stopped, seemingly out of nowhere. I have scoured the app notification settings and reinstalled the app to no avail. Unfortunate because the game and app are otherwise both so good!

Race for the Galaxy is a great game, and I've had fantastic fun playing it on tabletop. The app does a good job of adapting it to an app. You don't have to worry about shuffling that increasingly large pile of cards (which can get rather ridiculous if you sleeve it), and counting the score is done for you. Playing against ai makes it possible to have fun playing "solo". You can play online with other players with difference correspondence time length (30 mins to 4 weeks).
